Luis Calderon is one of the victims of the earthquake which occurred on April 16th and is presently living in one of the shelters in Bahia de Caraquez. He remembers that the day of the earthquake he lost his forearm mechanical prosthesis donated by la Junta de Beneficencia de Guayaquil the previous month of January.
Life changed for Luis and his family a year ago when he lost both extremities due to an electric discharge in a work accident “With the prosthesis I was given before I was relieved because I was no longer fully dependant on my family. I could eat by myself, tie my shoelaces, comb my hair and even ride a bycycle.
It was very useful and that is why I requested another donation” commented an excited Luis who arrived in the company of his wife and very young daughter to receive a friendly hand.
Eight year-old Scarlet arrived with her mother from her birthplace, Manta. The little girl was born without her left extremity. While she received explanations and was shown a video regarding the use of the prosthesis, she showed herself very anxious to learn how to use it.
Other beneficiaries were Juan Matute (61) and Angel Avila (63) who received a prosthesis while Lia Quizpe ( 52) and Sabino Aviles (49) minus both arms, received two prosthesis each one.
Prosthesis are donated by “ The Ellen Meadows Prosthetic Hand” and la Junta de Beneficencia summons those who need it to come forward to request it free of charge or write to the following electronic addresses:
