Luz Barberán, a native from the Province of Manabí and mother to a boy and a girl, was hospitalized by her parents in the Neurosciences Institute 25 years, ago when it was known as "Hospital Psiquiátrico Lorenzo Ponce, diagnosed as schizophrenic. Her parents never again paid her a visit.
As years went by Luz´s children did not believe the story their grandfather had told them regarding their mother´s fate. According to him, she had passed away.
Having grown up, Luz´s children moved to Catacocha, in the Paltas Canton, in Loja Province, looking for work and better opportunities in life. It was then they decided to search for their mother, with the help of friends.
One of them contacted the Neurosciences Institute to inquire about Luz Barberán. She was interned in a residence at the Neurosciences Institute ! Quickly, Lic. Ana Ramón, a member of the residential team contacted the children who, on hearing the news, could not hold tears and emotions back. Their mother was alive !
A few days later, Luz Barberan´s children visited the Neurosciences Institute with mixed emotions, nervous but with a smile on their faces for an emotional reencounter. After this visit all pertinent procedures for Luz to return home with her children were taken care of.
We do not know why she was abandoned or why their grandfather lied, but we have the certainty, the pride and joy of having restored a smile, and a home, having done what many believed impossible which is to reunite the children with their mother after 25 years and that is what matters.
